Art promotes creative growth. It helps learning new things and also helps in speeding up the learning process with a hands-on approach. This is especially true in kids. One of the best ways to spark curiosity of science into kids is to combine science with art. This enables a practical approach to learning something complex. Anyone who indulges himself in art gets to know more about the idea and the topic in detail as he draws and paints the idea into a reality. Here we will discuss fun science themed art projects that anyone can enjoy.
Rainbow Milk Experiment
Through this experiment one can create a rainbow with milk. Fat molecules in the milk break down to create a mix of color. To break the fat molecules dish soap is used in the experiment.
Steps: Take a plate. Put some milk on the plate and add some food color. Take a cotton bud and swab it on a dish soap. Then gently touch the milk with the cotton bud. As the cotton bud comes in contact with the milk, fat molecules in the milk start to break down. This will create a rainbow-like colorful texture on the milk’s surface. Lastly, take a picture of the colorful art you have just created.
DIY Lava Lamp
You can use the product of this experiment as a decoration to your home. It’s a practical art project with science and it’s simple to do so with simple materials.
Supplies:
- A clear bottle
- Water
- Vegetable oil
- Food coloring
- Alka Seltzer tablets
Steps: First take a bottle and fill two thirds of it with oil and rest with water. Put some food color into the water. Lastly put the Alka Seltzer tablet in the bottle. You will notice colorful dancing of blobs inside the bottle.
Here the reason water floats on oil is because of the difference in density. The bubbles are formed because of carbon dioxide gas formed by the tablet. You can create different color lighting with different food colors.
Crystal Creations
This project is a great way to learn about chemistry, especially structure of materials. Besides, you will be able to create crystals that will work great as art pieces for decoration.
Supplies:
- Borax
- Hot water
- Glass jar
- Pipe cleaner
- String
Steps: First take a pipe cleaner and give it shape by twisting and bending. You can make shapes like circles, stars or hearts. Now put some borax in a jar of hot water. Slowly put the pipe cleaner in the jar to submerge it. Before putting the pipe cleaner into the jar use the string to hang it. Now leave the jar overnight. The solution will saturate and form a crystal to the shape of your pipe cleaner.
As the solution cools down and water evaporates the bond between borax particles strengthens giving the mixture a crystalized structure. You can add color to the solution to create colorful crystals.
Leaf Chromatography Art
In this experiment you can discover the secret colors in leaves and create beautiful art with the help of nature.
Supplies:
- Leaves
- Rubbing alcohol
- Coffee Filter
- Jars
Steps: Firstly crush a collected leaf and put it into a jar. Then put some rubbing alcohol on the crushed leaf. Leave the jar like this for a few hours. Then put a coffee filter in the jar so it can touch the alcohol. In time you will be able to notice colors floating on the filter.
There are various components of leaves that produce pigments such as chlorophyll. These pigments are separated by the alcohol slowly so you can see the colors floating on the filter. You can use the colored filter in various art projects as backgrounds or part of abstract arts.
Solar System Chalk Art
A simple great outdoor activity where you can recreate the solar system. All you need is some colorful chalks and a place to draw such as pavements, sidewalks or driveways.
Steps: Firstly use a yellow colored chalk to draw the sun in the middle. Then create orbits with white chalk. Then draw various planets with different colors according to the solar system. Make sure to draw planets in different sizes to make it more enticing.
Through this art project kids can learn about solar systems. The size of the sun and the planets and their positions. You can encourage your kids to add moons and stars to expand the project.
Science themed art projects make the learning process more enjoyable. These projects inspire creative thinking about science which is essential for a child’s development. With a few supplies parents can enjoy a wonderful time with their kids while teaching them about lots of things in the process just with art projects.
